Internships

Fort Walla Walla Museum offers internships in museum administration, collections management, event coordination, and museum operations. Currently seeking:


Collections Intern

The Collections Intern will work with museum staff to organize, clean, digitize, photograph, catalog, and label artifacts that will be housed in one of the museum’s collection repositories. The intern may also utilize archival and/or non-archival materials to plan and/or prepare a display.

Requested hours per week: 8-12 hours, unpaid.

Potential Majors:

Most majors may apply—strong interest and career goals with museums preferred, including cultural heritage, American history, anthropology, and library science.

Responsibilities:

  • Processing of the collection, including physical arrangement (sorting, boxing, labeling)

  • Inventorying and describing of materials

  • Creating database records

  • Communicating with other collection interns and collection staff

  • Possibly assisting in planning and/or preparing for a related exhibit.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Experience with database, information processing preferred

  • Photography skills, digital camera use

  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills

  • Strong computer, communication, and organizational skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Undergraduate Junior/Senior classification with a 3.0 GPA minimum

Communications Intern

The Communications Intern will assist in the production of general awareness content for Fort Walla Walla Museum. The intern is expected to research topics, create graphics, review work with the communications manager, and publish content focused on the variety of resources that the Museum provides, which is both entertaining and educational, and that maintains Fort Walla Walla Museum’s brand identity.

Requested hours per week: 5-20 hours, unpaid.

Potential Majors:

Most majors may apply—strong interest and career goals with strategic communications, history, graphic design, or marketing preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Present novel ideas for new, seasonal, and cross-platform content

  • Create and follow a posting calendar with a focus on consistency through various media channels

  • Write regular blog posts

  • Catalogue advertising and publicity of Fort Walla Walla Museum

  • Digitizing old photographs of Fort Walla Walla Museum

  • Assist with projects such as event photography at Comms. Manager discretion.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Experience with social media, producing branded content preferred

  • Photography or videography skills, digital camera use

  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, or comparable programs

  • Undergraduate Junior/Senior classification with a 3.0 GPA minimum
